Ask vets what keeps them late and most will say the same thing: notes. The consult takes twenty minutes; writing it up properly takes more time at the end of the day, from memory, when everyone else has gone home. AI scribes are built to move that writing back into the consult, without taking the vet out of charge.

Where the time goes

  • Typing the history while trying to listen to the owner and examine the animal.
  • Turning rough notes into a structured record with Subjective, Objective, Assessment and Plan sections.
  • Writing the same thing twice: once for the record and again, in plain language, for the owner.
  • Catching up on the notes you couldn't finish between patients.

Each of these is small. Across a full day of consults, they add up to a long evening.

What an AI scribe does

Most AI scribes work in two steps:

  1. Capture. The vet dictates, or the conversation is transcribed, so the words are written down without typing.
  2. Draft. An AI model turns the transcript and any notes into a draft record, for example a SOAP note, and can write a plain-language summary for the owner.

The vet then reads the draft, corrects it, and saves it. The time saved comes from editing a draft instead of writing from a blank page, and from finishing the note in the room while the details are fresh.

What it should never do

  • Diagnose or decide treatment. The assessment and plan are the vet's clinical judgement. An AI draft is a starting point to check, not a decision.
  • Save anything without a person. Nothing should go into the medical record until the vet has reviewed it.
  • Invent findings. AI models can state things that weren't said or examined. A good scribe keeps the draft close to what was actually recorded, and the vet removes anything that wasn't.

How to check a draft

  1. Check the patient: right animal, right owner, right visit.
  2. Read every number: weight, temperature, heart rate, doses and durations.
  3. Make sure every finding in Objective was actually examined, and nothing is missing.
  4. Rewrite the Assessment and Plan in your own clinical words if the draft doesn't say exactly what you mean.
  5. Check drug names and doses against your formulary or a dose check.
  6. Only then save and sign.

Privacy questions to ask

  • Where does the audio or text go when the AI writes a draft, and which company processes it?
  • Is the recording stored, and for how long?
  • Who in the clinic can use the AI, and is its use limited or counted?
  • Can you use the software without the AI if a client prefers?

How it works in Vetlyn

In Vetlyn, the vet can dictate into any SOAP field using the browser's own speech recognition, in ten languages including English and Urdu. Draft with AI then writes a SOAP draft from the vet's notes, with a short list of things to check. The vet applies each section, or all of them, edits freely, and nothing is saved until they save. Signed visits are locked. A take-home note for the owner can be drafted in English, Roman Urdu or Urdu.

When the AI is used, the text needed for that draft is sent to our AI provider to write it; the details are on our security page. Each plan includes a monthly allowance of AI notes; see pricing. Step-by-step instructions are in the AI Scribe help article, and our guide to faster, better SOAP notes covers the writing itself.
